Sake Ware

Just as there is barware for wine, beer, cocktails and other beverages, there is also sake ware! Sake comes with a rich history and tradition that extends to the vessels in which it is served. Sake ware ranges in size, shape and material, and all of these factors have an effect on aroma and flavor.

The most traditional is the “masu,” a cubic wooden cup that was originally used to measure out rice. It imparts a forest-like flavor and aroma on the sake inside. The smallest sake cup is the “ochoko,” and slightly larger than that is the “guinomi.” You’ve likely seen these cups partnered with a “tokkuri,” or carafe. These can be used for cold or warm sake, and can be made of materials such as ceramic, glass, or even tin. There are also sake warmers that maintain the temperature of warm sake. Finally, sake sets are wonderful to invest in if you enjoy hosting.
The price of sake ware depends on the item type, its material and level of craftsmanship. Single cups can be as affordable as $7-$30, such as the colorful “Sango no Umi” Guinomi Glass. Sake sets can range from $60, like the “Mino no Takumi” Black With Luster Glaze Sake Set, up to a few hundred dollars, like the stunning Edo Kiriko Chirori Sake Set Blue. Whether you’re looking for clear glass, lustrous lacquerware or gold-plated vessels, you can find it all at Tippsy!
