These wooden boxes, called “masu,” have been around for 1300 years, and have a long history in Japan as a measurement of rice and also as serving vessels for sake. You can sip your sake directly from the box, or place a glass in it for a style of service where they overflow the glass to show generosity. “Hinoki” (Japanese cypress) is soft to the touch, and becomes aromatic when sake is poured in it.
