Meet the Brewery

Shusenkurano

Founded in 1540, Shusenkurano is Nagano prefecture’s oldest brewery — a samurai-era treasure once enjoyed by lord Shingen Takeda. Led by trailblazing female brewmaster Mariko Chino, it draws on a 460-year-old well to craft refined, silky nigori sake.

A Legacy Forged in Battle: Nagano’s Oldest Brewery Embraces a Global Future

Founded in 1540, Shusenkurano is the oldest brewery in Nagano prefecture, and a living piece of Japanese history. Located near the legendary Kawanakajima battlefield, its sake was famously enjoyed by the samurai lord Shingen Takeda. We discovered this gem while searching for a nigori that offered a more refined balance than the region’s typical heavy styles. Though the brewery was initially hesitant to export, our persistence convinced them to share their centuries-old tradition with us.

The pioneer of a new era

For centuries, sake breweries were considered sacred spaces where women were strictly forbidden to enter. Mariko Chino — the brewery’s first female brewmaster — shattered this tradition when she took the helm in 2000. After studying microbiology and training at a national research institute, she returned home to refine her family’s legacy. Chino describes herself as a teacher to her brews, nurturing the unique personality of each batch. Her expert touch has earned the brewery numerous awards, proving that they are not afraid to evolve.

Water from the depths of time

The soul of Shusenkurano lies in the fertile soils of the Zenkoji Plain. Their water is drawn from a well that has served the brewery for over 460 years, providing the pristine meltwater of the Chikuma and Sai rivers. This soft, nutrient-rich water is paired with local Miyamanishiki rice, which the brewery cultivates through dedicated contracts with neighborhood farmers. By participating in everything from spring planting to autumn harvests, the team ensures that every grain reflects the terroir of Nagano. This commitment creates sake that is deeply rooted in the land.
