Located in verdant Takahata, this Yamagata prefecture brewery takes its name from the local folktale “The Crane’s Return of a Favor,” reflecting values of gratitude and sincerity. In operation since 1697, Yonetsuru Brewing Company served as the official sake brewery for the ruling Uesugi clan at the end of the Edo period (1603-1868). Their focus is smooth, refreshing sake for beginners and enthusiasts alike. As part of the Takahata Town Sake Rice Research Association, the brewery helped local farmers develop the Kissui rice strain. Yonetsuru practices environmental sustainability and also offers educational opportunities for local students to learn about agriculture.
