Founded in 1716, Abekan Brewing Company dates back to the days of the powerful Date clan. The brewery has been providing sacred sake to the Shiogama Shrine for more than 300 years. For the most part, they brew with rice grown locally in Miyagi prefecture. Their style is one that embraces the umami of the rice and finishes smooth. Their goal is to craft sake that can be enjoyed with meals — particularly the local cuisine of the port town where they are located. In 2003, the brewery began producing shochu from the sake lees left over from the brewing process.
